Name:
Location: Indiana, United States

I became a Professor Emeritus after serving 29 years as a recreational therapy faculty member at Indiana University. I'm a long-time Hoosier, having grown up in Hanover, Indiana. My RT practitioner work was in psych/mental health. After completing my Ph.D. at the University of Illinois, my first faculty position was at the University of North Texas. RT has been a wonderful profession for me as I have had the opportunity to serve as an author and national leader.

Thanks to Professor Frank Basile

Professor Frank Basile, Ph.D., CTRS, assumed the leadership for the newly created National Academy of Recreational Therapists (NART) when he was voted NART President earlier this year. In Septmeber, Frank conducted the initial NART meeting at LaRue Carter Memorial Hospital in Indianapolis.

It is great to have an academy for recreational therapy and Frank is to be congratulated and thanked for his leadership role within NART.

Music Therapy Gains Recognition

I was pleased to see an USA Today article (page 12B)this morning titled "Music Can Heal Mind, Body, Soul." The article explained how music therapy is used in the treatment of a variety of physical problems. The article contained information about the use of music therapy in the recovery of Congresswoman Giffords.

An accompanying piece listed ways music can help rewire the brain after a traumatic injury. These included: trigger memories; promote learning; elicit emotions; provide motivation; improve coordination; adn reduce stress and pain.

As I read the list of therapeutic benefits, I could not help but think that RT can provide the same benefits. Go MT and RT!

New York Examining RT Licensure

Robin Waxler, of New York State, directed me to the following:

As many of you know, licensure for Recreation Therapy has been granted in three states: Utah, North Carolina and New Hampshire. Other states are presently exploring the viability of licensure in their respective states. Professions such as social work and the creative arts therapies have been granted licensure in recent years. The legal regulation of Recreation Therapy protects the consumer as well as the future of our profession. Keeping these reasons in mind, a committee has been formed to examine licensure in New York State. Members of the committee are Lynn Anderson, Eileen Andreassie, Ray Archer, Vincent Bonadies, Linda Dianto, Mimi Fierle, Kristin Impicciatore, Anthony Martino, Mary Beth Pozzuto, Rose Rothe, Loretta Sinnott, Isabel Tiffen, Daryl Willenbrink, Felicia T. Zeigler.

Lessons Learned Review by an MD

Joav Merrick, MD, reviewed An Open Letter to Recreational Therapy Students and Practitioners published by Sagamore Publishing. Here is the review as it appeared on Amazon.com

David R Austin is professor emeritus from Indiana University with many years of experience as a practitioner and academic and in this book inspired by Irvin Yalom (The gift of therapy: An open letter to a new generation of therapists and their patients) he is giving his core beliefs on recreational therapy.

In 69 short lessons (chapters) he is able to make an all round picture of recreational therapy for both people starting their work in this field and also for practitioners already working in the field. It is a short and readable introduction to recreational therapy where you feel the "fire and enthusiasm" from a professional with many years of experience.

Are We Demanding Enough of RT Students?

I sent the message below out on ATRAnet last night. It has already drawn 3 lenghly responses -- so I thought I'd share it on the RT Blog. Here it is:

Hi RT Colleague,

Are we challenging RT students today? Arum and Roksa (2011) wrote in their book, Academically Adrift: Limited Learning on College Campuses:

“In a typical semester…32% of the students did not take a single course with more than 40 pages of reading per week, and 50% did not take any course requiring more than 20 pages of writing over the semester. The average student spent only 12 to 13 hours per week studying – about half the time a full-time college student in 1960 spent studying…” (p. 70).

They also stated: “…37 percent of students reported spending less than five hours per week preparing for their courses” (p. 69). (That is 5 hours per week for all their courses!)

Reading this makes me wonder just how much RT professors are demanding of their students. If you are a professor and are assigning less than 40 pages per week in your course, and not assigning regular writing assignments, I hope you will reevaluate what you are expecting of your students.

Think about it. As a professor, do you not owe it to your students and to the profession to hold high expectations for your students?

Lessons Learned Review Reposted

In case you missed it, here is an earlier post on Lessons Learned:

Weeks ago I promised to share information from the positive reviews of my new book titled Lessons Learned: An Open Letter to Recreational Therapy Students and Practitioners. One review appeared in the American Journal of Recreation Therapy. The other was written by Dr. Terry Long and appeared in Therapeutic Recreation Journal (TRJ).

The quote below is from Terry Long’s review of Lessons Learned that was in TRJ:

“Current practitioners (including educators) can benefit from reviewing this text as it is a quick reminder of many important elements of recreational therapy. The book is certainly useful as a tool for facilitating clinical supervision, professional issues discussions, and a review of the presented lessons definitely suggests possible topics for future continuing education opportunities. Finally, there are personal applications of the lessons as well. For example, lessons regarding values, self-awareness, burnout, and active listening skills, and aggression can have both personal and professional relevance to readers.”

Lessons Learned was published by Sagamore Publishing in 2011 and may be obtained by going to the Sagamore Publishing website. Lessons Learned is also available as an e-book from Amazon.com

I Enjoyed the RTI Conference

The ole Hoosier RT (aka David Austin) had a great time today speaking at the Recreation Therapists of Indiana Conference held in Bloomington. Marieke Van Puymbroeck, RTI President, did a wonderful job of organizing and conducting RTI's 2011 annual conference. Vicki Scott, M.S. CTRS, ATRA President and fellow Hoosier, gave the other morning general session. Vicki sure is on top of the world of health care. Very impressive knowledge of the topic.

It was a treat for me to get to see many IU alums at the RTI Conference. Several did educational sessions, including Don Rogers, Ph.D., CTRS (from Indiana State University) and Bob Krider, M.S., CTRS (from Cincinnati).

It made me feel good to interact with so many rec therapy practitioners, students (from both IU and ISU), and faculty (again from both IU and ISU). We have a fine group of RTs here in Indiana. I'm glad to have had the opportunity to interact with them today.

Having just posted on the ATRAnet listserv, I discovered there are now 334 individuals on ATRAnet. This is a nice jump in the numbers.

It seems to me that I recall Tim Passmore recently encourged RTs to join ATRAnet. It must have had some effect. Good going Tim!

Reflection Recognition Reaffirmation: An Engaging Frame of Reference for Leisure Education, 2nd Edition
By Jeff Witman and Mary Ligon
Published by Idyll Arbor
Publication date: 2011
ISBN: 9781882883738

Reflection Recognition Reaffirmation: An Engaging Frame of Reference for Leisure Education (2nd Edition) is a practical handbook for implementing leisure education programs with a variety of populations in varied settings. Each chapter provides numerous clearly defined activities that can be easily incorporated into programming.

The notion of a sequential approach (Reflection Recognition Reaffirmation) represents a process in which program participants move from contemplation to action in creating more positive lifestyles. First, participants are engaged in experiences that encourage them to consider leisure as something with unique meanings to them (Reflection). Next, they’re involved in activities that allow for some clarification of the role of leisure in their lives (Recognition). Finally, participants are asked to consider where they want to go with what they’ve learned about themselves (Reaffirmation).

RT Student Opportunity in Costa Rica

From Dr. Dan Ferguson, CTRS, via the ATRAnet Listserv:

I wanted to let you know that again this year I will be taking a group of students to Costa Rica for a study abroad experience. The program dates are May 13 to May 31 (19 days). We will be in a small mountain town where we will spend our weekdays working in a Casa de Ancianos (assisted living center) and at the Center for Persons with Disabilities with mostly intellectually impaired adults but some with physical disabilities as well.

At both of these facilities we provide a variety of recreation programs. Neither facility has a recreation or activity program. So for two weeks we are the program. Students will have plenty of opportunity to test their skills in a way that is very safe and enjoyable. Students do not have to speak Spanish, but of course any language ability at all it will be extremely useful.

We will live with Costa Rican families and learn a lot about the culture of Costa Rica. On weekends we travel to great places like Manuel Antonio National Park where we take a rain forest hike to see monkeys, sloths, snakes, lizards and other amazing critters before making our way to a great beach for the rest of the day. We visit a cloud forest where we take a night hike to see nocturnal creatures and take a canopy tour that includes a half mile long zip line and other adventures.

All majors are invited to participate in this trip but most students are majors in therapeutic recreation, rec. administration, phys ed. or Spanish minor but I have also taken students in special ed, gerontology, social work, psychology, nursing, international studies and business, and even broadcasting. I have had Freshman through Graduate Students. If you have a student or two who might be interested in this amazing experience, please pass this information to them and they can contact me for more specific information at ferguson@pittstate.edu
