I became a Professor Emeritus after serving 29 years as a recreational therapy faculty member at Indiana University. I'm a long-time Hoosier, having grown up in Hanover, Indiana. My RT practitioner work was in psych/mental health. After completing my Ph.D. at the University of Illinois, my first faculty position was at the University of North Texas. RT has been a wonderful profession for me as I have had the opportunity to serve as an author and national leader.

Recreational Therapist Brentwood Meadows is a 48-bed, state of the art mental health and addiction treatment center, offering highly specialized services for adults and their families. Brentwood Meadows provides a compassionate and results-driven approach to treatment for those who are struggling with emotional and mental health issues, and drug and alcohol addiction. Job Description Brentwood Meadows is seeking a dynamic and dedicated Recreation Therapist to provide planning, oversight, and monitoring of Activity Therapy (AT) for our mental health and substance abuse inpatient programs. Our mission is to change people’s lives, so we are looking for passionate staff willing to collaborate with team members to live our mission and impact those we serve. This position will be full time and will require some weekend work. Recreation Therapist serves as a member of the interdisciplinary team to provide therapeutic recreational and activity services to patients hospitalized for treatment of substance abuse, dual diagnosis, or psychiatric or emotional disorders. The AT plans, organizes and directs medically approved recreation programs, including such activities as sports, dramatics, games, arts and crafts to assist patients to develop interpersonal relationships, to socialize effectively, and to develop confidence needed to participate in group activities. AT regulates content of the programs in accordance with patients’ capabilities, needs and interests. AT will instruct patients in relaxation techniques, calisthenics, and counsel and encourage patients to develop leisure activities. The CTRS will coordinate AT programming, plan and facilitate special events and outings, audit AT charts and work closely with the Director of Clinical Services to monitor programming. Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institute in Recreation Therapy. Experience: : Previous experience in a psychiatric health care facility, with direct experience working with chemical dependency, dual diagnosis, psychiatric and geriatric patients preferred. License: Current unencumbered CTRS certification or ability to obtain CTRS required. Additional Requirements: CPR certification and Crisis Prevention Training (CPI) within 30 days of employment and prior to any patient contact. May be required to work flexible hours and overtime. Utah RT in New Department and with New Faculty Member

The realigned College of Health at the University of Utah announces a new Recreational Therapy degree program in the Department of Occupational and Recreational Therapies. The program has received full approval from the Board of Regents and the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) and will begin offering classes in Fall, 2016. The Department of Occupational and Recreational Therapies is also excited to announce the appointment of Rhonda Nelson, Ph.D., CTRS, MT-BC as a new tenure track faculty member.
