Name:
Location: Indiana, United States

I became a Professor Emeritus after serving 29 years as a recreational therapy faculty member at Indiana University. I'm a long-time Hoosier, having grown up in Hanover, Indiana. My RT practitioner work was in psych/mental health. After completing my Ph.D. at the University of Illinois, my first faculty position was at the University of North Texas. RT has been a wonderful profession for me as I have had the opportunity to serve as an author and national leader.

Tough Interview Questions

Today's Indianapolis Star contained an article titled "Prepare for Tough Interview Questions." I thought some of the questions might be good ones for new graduates applying for positions to think about.

So here are some of the "tough questions:"
1. So, tell me about yourself.
2. Tell me about a time when you..."
3. Where do you see yourself in 5 or 10 years?
4. What are your weaknesses?
5. Why should we hire you over anyone else?
6. If you could be any kind of tree/animal/food what would you be?
7. What is the last book you read?

This Think Tank will explore current trends in health care, evidenced based practice, care delivery models as indicators of the change that is needed in preparing our profession for the future. It is hoped that we can produce a “white paper” from this. The “white paper” can be a useful tool to drive our professions strategic directions and priorities. The Think Tank discussions will be held at the DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Hotel Omaha. Rooms (rates from 99.00 USD/Night) must be reserved by April 24, 2012. In order to assure that you can leave town, if you wish to do so, on Friday, May 11 the meetings are scheduled to end by noon on that day.

Student Opportunity in Costa Rica

From Dr. Dan Ferguson, CTRS:

Pittsburg State University has a great study abroad program that includes 19 fantastic days in Costa Rica in May. The program has 2 projects daily. Mornings we work at a ‘Casa de Ancianos’ (Assisted Living Center) and in the afternoons at the Center for Persons with Disabilities. We provide recreation activities at both facilities, neither of which have any recreation therapists or other activity staff. We live with Costa Rican families in a small mountain town and eat Costa Rican food. On weekends we experience the incredible national parks and beaches that Costa Rica is famous for. We’ll have a night hike in the cloud forest, a whitewater rafting trip, and other great adventures. In their reflection papers 10 out of 11 students described the experience as “life changing.” I can add 2 more people to this year’s group. Spanish language is not required; just a willingness to work hard, use your skills and be ready to learn many new things. CTRS Opening in Chattanooga

From RT J.C. Emberton:
I recently began working for Parkridge Valley hospital in Chattanooga TN, Child and Adolescent department. I am currently in the process of developing a Recreation Therapy program for this department. I am reaching out to surrounding universities in an effort to make connections with other Recreation Therapists. We currently have an opening in our department for another CTRS, working closely with staff, as well as children, in our Residential Treatment, Acute Adolescent, Sub Acute Adolescent, Acute Latency and Sub Acute Latency programs. I moved to Chattanooga from a short stay in Seymour, Indiana a few months ago. While in Indiana, and for a few years prior, I had been in search of a Recreation Therapy job in that area. It became obvious to me that this was going to be hard to find, due to the amount of CTRS’s with the same goals. Naturally, I thought of the Indiana area as a source of potential employees, when they asked me if I knew of anyone else with a certification. If you know of anyone that may be interested and has the desire and ability to relocate, I hope you keep us in mind!

Our facility is located on 88 acres of woodland, boasting 3 miles of hiking trails, a 32 foot/3 sided climbing tower, low and high elements challenge course, disc golf course, baseball diamond and athletic field. We are an activity based treatment facility in search of a motivated, passionate and dedicated individual to join our team.

I have included the departmental, facility and job posting link. Please feel free to contact me with any interest or further questions. Thank you very much and have a great day.

New York State Working Hard on Licensure

RTs in New York seem to be well organized in their efforts to get licensure. From Robin Wexler, New York RT:

As many of you know, licensure for Recreation Therapy has been granted in four states: Utah, North Carolina, New Hampshire, and Oklahoma. Other states are presently exploring the viability of licensure in their respective states. Professions such as social work and the creative arts therapies have been granted licensure in recent years. The legal regulation of Recreation Therapy protects the consumer as well as the future of our profession. Keeping these reasons in mind, a committee has been formed to examine licensure in New York State. Members of the committee are Lynn Anderson, Eileen Andreassie, Ray Archer, Vincent Bonadies, Linda Dianto, Mimi Fierle, Kristin Impicciatore, Dorothy McNamara, Anthony Martino, Mary Beth Pozzuto, Rose Rothe, Loretta Sinnott, Isabel Tiffen, Daryl Willenbrink, Robin Wexler, Felicia T. Zeigler. For more info including links and sample letters, go to the License Recreation Therapy website https://sites.google.com/site/licensurenews/Home
