I became a Professor Emeritus after serving 29 years as a recreational therapy faculty member at Indiana University. I'm a long-time Hoosier, having grown up in Hanover, Indiana. My RT practitioner work was in psych/mental health. After completing my Ph.D. at the University of Illinois, my first faculty position was at the University of North Texas. RT has been a wonderful profession for me as I have had the opportunity to serve as an author and national leader.

Student Opportunity in Costa Rica

From Dr. Dan Ferguson, CTRS:

Pittsburg State University has a great study abroad program that includes 19 fantastic days in Costa Rica in May. The program has 2 projects daily. Mornings we work at a ‘Casa de Ancianos’ (Assisted Living Center) and in the afternoons at the Center for Persons with Disabilities. We provide recreation activities at both facilities, neither of which have any recreation therapists or other activity staff. We live with Costa Rican families in a small mountain town and eat Costa Rican food. On weekends we experience the incredible national parks and beaches that Costa Rica is famous for. We’ll have a night hike in the cloud forest, a whitewater rafting trip, and other great adventures. In their reflection papers 10 out of 11 students described the experience as “life changing.” I can add 2 more people to this year’s group. Spanish language is not required; just a willingness to work hard, use your skills and be ready to learn many new things. If you are interested in studying abroad and would like more information contact me as soon as possible to get an informational Power Point, information detailing the program and costs and to get your application started.
