I became a Professor Emeritus after serving 29 years as a recreational therapy faculty member at Indiana University. I'm a long-time Hoosier, having grown up in Hanover, Indiana. My RT practitioner work was in psych/mental health. After completing my Ph.D. at the University of Illinois, my first faculty position was at the University of North Texas. RT has been a wonderful profession for me as I have had the opportunity to serve as an author and national leader.

IU Has Announced a Faculty Position Opening

Department of Recreation, Park, and Tourism Studies at Indiana University has announced a faculty position in recreaional therapy is available. Position: Assistant/Associate Professor (Tenure Track, 10 month appointment beginning no later than Fall 2015) Primary Responsibilities: Engage in a focused line of scholarly inquiry on the contribution of recreational therapy to enhancing functional health and/or prevention of health conditions. Seek and secure extramural funding for research focused on the use of recreational therapy in secondary and tertiary health promotion supporting independent functioning and reduction of health conditions secondary to disability and disease. Provide high quality instruction in graduate program, departmental core classes, and majors’ courses as assigned. Lead development of Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH) major in the department. Recruitment and mentoring of graduate students. Provide service to the department, institution and profession. Engage in collaborative research with School of Public Health faculty as well as participate in interdisciplinary research across the IU campuses, and in a global context.

Overview: This is an upper level/senior management position at Bradford Woods with major oversight in high intensity medical and illness specific programs in the outdoor setting. Oversee and provide the vision, leadership, supervision, and direction for the development, growth, and sustainability of the Recreation Therapy (RT) area including oversight of Medical Camping and Therapeutic Programs consisting of 1,000 youth with chronic illnesses and disabilities annually along with a $1.1 million budget, 80 staff and 50 volunteers. Foster and maintain lasting relationships with major foundations, non-profits, and health care professionals associated with carrying out these important pediatric programs from around the state. Work in collaboration with faculty on pediatric research and student placements for credit. Qualifications: Minimum Education: Degree in Recreation Therapy with CTRS or able to get a CTRS within 6 months of hire date. Experience: 5-10 years of progressively increased responsibility in management of services for youth with chronic illness and disability, 1-2 years’ experience in therapeutic outdoor programming. Volunteers Sought for Bradford Woods

From Shay Dawson , Director of Bradford Woods: Hey Gang. Bradford Woods is looking for volunteers for the two week Camp Riley session July 13th-25th. We will be hosting youth with physical disabilities. Programming includes adapted scuba, water skiing, universal zip line, IU Athletic night, 4xkids jeep day, and much more. Come join us at the Woods for the entire session or for a couple of days. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
