I became a Professor Emeritus after serving 29 years as a recreational therapy faculty member at Indiana University. I'm a long-time Hoosier, having grown up in Hanover, Indiana. My RT practitioner work was in psych/mental health. After completing my Ph.D. at the University of Illinois, my first faculty position was at the University of North Texas. RT has been a wonderful profession for me as I have had the opportunity to serve as an author and national leader.

DSH-V is a 439-bed inpatient psychiatric facility within a state prison serving incarcerated males. We are seeking qualified individuals interested in FT positions as Rehabilitation Therapists (Recreation). The Rehab Therapist works within the IDTT by providing evaluation and treatment services to mentally ill patients who are referred by the CDCR. The Rehab Therapist works within a forensic setting providing therapeutic treatment groups, is an active participant in the IDTT, conducts assessments, develops treatment plans, evaluates and documents patients’ progress and participates in professional service meetings.
Minimum qualifications for employment include: Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree with major work in recreation therapy and completion of an approved clinical internship at a site affiliated with the college; applicants who have not completed a clinical internship because it was not a component of the academic program at the time, are required to have completed a minimum of two years full-time paid experience in a clinical, residential, or community-based setting after receipt of the required degree

Brief Description: This is a wonderful opportunity to positively impact the lives of children with special needs and enrich their well-being. If you are a Certified Activity Therapy Manager with at least 3 years of management experience and have been responsible for planning and leading therapeutic activities in a behavioral health or hospital setting, this is the job for you. Applicants must have supervision experience.
Detailed Summary: The Certified Activity Therapy Manager is responsible for planning, organizing, implementing, evaluating and directing the Activity Therapy program for children/adolescents with emotional/behavioral challenges in our residential program. Applicants must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation Therapy, or Art/Music Therapy from an accredited school and certification as required by state regulations from the appropriate professional organization such the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation (NCTRC). Applicants must have a minimum of 3 years management/supervision experience. The Activity Therapy Manager plans and implements individual and group recreation services that support the client’s treatment plan, contributes to the care of the client through the interdisciplinary team, and documents activities for each client. The Activity Therapy Manager provides supervision to other recreational staff and volunteers to achieve delivery of quality recreation services to all in residence. The Activity Therapy Manager is responsible for evaluating the effectiveness of the activities provided and takes initiative to enhance and improve recreational programming on an ongoing basis.

TRJ Call for Papers
A Call for Papers for a future special issue of the Therapeutic Recreation Journal has been released. The topic is Measuring Evidence-Based Outcomes.
Manuscripts that address evidence-based practices, outcomes measurement, and accountability for the therapeutic recreation process are being solicited. The deadline for submissions is June 1, 2014.

Colleen Cooke Announces SRU Workshop

Slippery Rock University’s Annual Therapeutic Recreation Workshop is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, March 1, 2014. This is a great opportunity to earn CEUs at a very affordable price!
More specific details will follow, however at this point we are seeking presentation proposals. Please note that this event serves as the primary fundraising activity for the TR Club, and we do not provide remuneration for presenters. That said, please DO consider presenting! If you would like to propose a session, please complete a session proposal using the attached format and email it to me at colleen.cooke@sru.edu. Proposals must be received by January 11, 2014 in order to be considered.
