We aim to enhance the quality of life for all through recreation services in a wide range of settings. We are one of three departments in the College of Health and Human Performance, and we offer undergraduate degrees in recreational therapy and recreation and park management and a graduate degree in recreation services and interventions with concentrations in recreational therapy administration and recreation and park administration; we also offer two graduate certificates: Aquatic Therapy and Biofeedback. We are linked with the Center for Sustainable Tourism, the Institute for Coastal Science and Policy, Brody School of Medicine, and other units. Our department is well established and includes 18 faculty members and approximately 220 undergraduate and 50 graduate students. We are a rich and vibrant community of scholars. The Chair of Recreation and Leisure Studies is the leader of the department and is responsible for promoting quality instruction and mentoring; fostering research productivity that positively impacts eastern North Carolina and beyond; and applying expertise in innovative ways that benefit collaborators from campus, the community and the discipline. As the department administrator, the Chair reports directly to the Dean of the College of Health and Human Performance.
Earned doctorate in Recreation and Leisure Studies or related field; demonstrated administrative effectiveness; demonstrated record of scholarship and teaching effectiveness commensurate with tenure at the rank of Associate or Full Professor and appointment to the University Graduate Faculty; demonstrated ability to interact effectively with faculty members, administrators and students; and commitment to diversity in higher education.
Qualifying degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions and conferred by the time of hire.
Experience with accreditation is preferred.
