I became a Professor Emeritus after serving 29 years as a recreational therapy faculty member at Indiana University. I'm a long-time Hoosier, having grown up in Hanover, Indiana. My RT practitioner work was in psych/mental health. After completing my Ph.D. at the University of Illinois, my first faculty position was at the University of North Texas. RT has been a wonderful profession for me as I have had the opportunity to serve as an author and national leader.

RT Psych Position Opening

From Diane Skalko: Highland Springs Hospital, near Cleveland, Ohio, is seeking dynamic individuals for our IP Therapist positions. Highland Springs Hospital will be a 72 bed free-standing psychiatric and addiction hospital providing inpatient and outpatient services. Our outpatient services will include day treatment, intensive outpatient and aftercare programs. This newly constructed building is located in Highland Hills, Ohio and is scheduled to open in the late fall of 2015. The building was designed and built to enhance the treatment experience through a safe, healing, and therapeutic environment. Our mission is to provide the highest quality evidence-based treatment to adults, adolescents, older adults, military service members and others suffering from mental illness and/or addition. Our treatment services are delivered in a professional and compassionate environment from healthcare professions who are dedicated to helping others to live a life of sobriety and mental wellness. Description Position Summary: Recreational Therapist serves as a member of the interdisciplinary team to provide therapeutic recreational and activity services to patients hospitalized for treatment of substance abuse, dual diagnosis, or psychiatric or emotional disorders. AT plans, organizes and directs medically approved recreation programs, including such activities as sports, dramatics, games, arts and crafts to assist patients to develop interpersonal relationships, to socialize effectively, and to develop confidence needed to participate in group activities. AT regulates content of the programs in accordance with patients’ capabilities, needs and interests. AT will instruct patients in relaxation techniques, calisthenics, and counsel and encourage patients to develop leisure activities. This is a full time position. Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institute in Recreational Therapy or relevant licensure or certification per state of practice guidelines. CTRS required Experience: Previous experience in a psychiatric health care facility, with direct experience working with chemical dependency, dual diagnosis, psychiatric and geriatric patients preferred. Additional Requirements: CPR certification and Crisis Prevention Training (CPI) within 30 days of employment and prior to any patient contact.
