I became a Professor Emeritus after serving 29 years as a recreational therapy faculty member at Indiana University. I'm a long-time Hoosier, having grown up in Hanover, Indiana. My RT practitioner work was in psych/mental health. After completing my Ph.D. at the University of Illinois, my first faculty position was at the University of North Texas. RT has been a wonderful profession for me as I have had the opportunity to serve as an author and national leader.

Concern for Lack of RT/TR at Research Universities

The closing of the Penn State TR Program, I believe, should be met with great concern by those in our profession. Over the years a number of universities have closed down their TR/RT programs, including well known ones at Oregon, Illinois, and Maryland.

Isn't it about time that the profession has concern for the lack of RT/TR programs at R1 institutions? If we do not have strong programs at major research universities, who will do our research and scholarship? Who will train Ph.D. prepared faculty?

I think it is past time that university faculty get together to address the situation. What do you think?

My undergraduate school, Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia has closed their RT/TR degree program a year after I had graduated.

West Virginia University (Morgantown, W.Va.) had closed their program several years ago, too.

Our state has two schools that still have a degree program:

Shepard University, Shepard, W.Va.
WV State, Institute, W.Va.

As a professional recreational therapist, I am especially concerned about the closing of programs at schools where research is completed. It is very important that we have continued research because of the growing expectation for evidenced-based practices.
